We made it to 2025, let’s do this! Happy New Year, everyone.
This week:
How to Spin a Bar
Bear Crossing
Need for Speed: Bicycle Messengers in New York
Games Party
What Kind of Man (Nicolas Jaar Remix) - Florence and the Machine
How to Spin a Bar/Rod/Stick/Straight Sturdy Object
I love picking up what others might term trivial skills.
This definitely qualifies. I’ve been doing it with my umbrella. Don’t tell anyone. I want it to be a surprise.
Bear Crossing
I just thought this was a stupefying image. It looks like something out of a dream or a novel. I’m speaking, of course, of this video of a bear cub playing with a red balloon on the side of the highway:
Need for Speed: Bicycle Messengers in New York
I will confess, this free 1 hour 22 minute documentary about New York City bike couriers in the 90’s is still on my watch list. Don’t let that stop you from watching it before me. From the clips I’ve seen, it looks really good.
Game Party
I came across a fun book from 1894 whose name I will not write here because it could be easily misconstrued (you’ll see what I mean). But, it’s in the public domain so I can just share it with you:
The book is over 300 pages entirely about a particular party concept, how fun. The party idea is simple, every invitee has to bring some sort of game, riddle, or other diversion to the party. The author and their friends threw a lot of these parties so they came up with a lot of game ideas apparently.
A game I liked was “Historical Figure” where everyone in the party takes a slip of paper and writes on it a famous or historical figure. Then everyone passes that slip of paper and passes it one person to the right. That person must attempt to draw the person whose name is written down. Afterwards the drawings are passed around and everyone writes down guesses of who the artist was trying to draw.
(This book is how I discovered that the game Telephone used to be referred to as Russian Scandal before telephones were ubiquitous.)
What Kind of Man (Nicolas Jaar Remix) - Florence and the Machine
Thank You!
See ya next week.
2025 and so alive,
